We manufactured the sizing tool, highlighted here, which was designed for use in the cardiovascular industry. Production involved machining the tool from a solid piece of 316 stainless steel. We accomplished this project in two setups to leverage the capabilities of two different machines. After using a two-axis lathe to turn the part, we transitioned production to one of our vertical CNC machining centers equipped with a high pressure coolant system. Keeping the machining work zone cool and the tools sharp, we took advantage of the full power of the vertical mill. High speed 3D surfacing allowed us to create a uniform curve, precise end detailing and 32 or better surface finishes. After machining, we passivated the workpiece in compliance ASTM A967 standards for medical-grade alloys. Our quality control process included full dimensional inspection using a Zeiss CMM to confirm all tolerances were met.
When completed, the part featured overall dimensions of 0.541” in diameter x 4.75” in length. By paying detailed attention to the production process, we satisfied the ±.001” tolerance requirements for this single-piece order. Our exemplary work sets the standard by which this customer evaluates all of their other suppliers, and awards us the highest ranking in our annual customer satisfaction survey.
